YMCA to Offer Swim Lessons at Park District Pools

The YMCA of Rock River Valley and Rockford Park District announced new ways to better serve the community’s aquatics needs.
Expanding an ongoing partnership means the YMCA will begin offering swim lessons at Alpine Park Pool and Harkins Pool, in addition to three other locations.

“The Rockford Park District believes in helping others do what they do best and the YMCA has more than 110 years of experience teaching people to swim. Expanding our partnership will have a positive impact on our community and allow us to operate more efficiently by eliminating duplication of services by another agency and focus our limited resources on the priorities established by our Board/community in our five-year Strategic Plan,” said Rockford Park District Executive Director Jay Sandine.

“Drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for children under four years. We want to waterproof our community so we can prevent these outcomes,” said YMCA CEO Brent Pentenburg. “Our lessons not only save lives with a skills-based approach, but build confidence. Parents will have comfort knowing their children are safe around water.”

Program fee assistance is available to those who qualify and you do not have to be a member of the YMCA to participate in lessons at Park District facilities.

The facilities are located at:
Alpine Pool, 4310 Newburg Rd., Rockford
Harkins Aquatic Center, 910 Acorn Street, Rockford
